He is best known for regrouping the retreating allied armies to defeat the Germans at the strategically decisive First Battle of the Marne in September 1914. He led spring offensives in 1915, in Verdun in 1916, and the Anglo-French offensive on the Somme in 1916. At the end of 1916 he was promoted to Marshal of France, the first such promotion under the Third Republic, and moved to an advisory role. He became leader of the Supreme War Council in 1918. He died in 1931, aged 78.
ERICH FRIEDRICH WILHELM LUDENDORFF (9 April 1865 - 20 December 1937) was a German general, the victor of the Battle of Liège and the Battle of Tannenberg. From August 1916, his appointment as Quartermaster general (Erster Generalquartiermeister) made him, along with Paul von Hindenburg, the leader of the German war efforts during World War I until his resignation in October 1918, just before the end of hostilities. He died in 1937, aged 72.
MARSHAL FERDINAND JEAN MARIE FOCH (2 October 1851 - 20 March 1929) was a French general and Marshal of France, Great Britain and Poland, a military theorist and the Supreme Allied Commander during World War I. He was a commander at the First Marne, Flanders, and Artois campaigns of 1914-1916 and became the Allied Commander-in-Chief in 1918, successfully co-ordinating the French, British, American, and Italian efforts. He died in 1929 aged 77.
GERMAN CROWN PRINCE WILHELM (6 May 1882 - 20 July 1951) was the last Crown Prince of the Kingdom of Prussia and the German Empire. During World War I he commanded the 5th Army from 1914-1916 and was commander of Army Group German Crown Prince for the remainder of the war. He died in 1951 aged 69.показать меньше
