She was raised in Conakry, Guinea, with her siblings by her mother, without her father.
It all started in 2002 when she was sent to a village called Dian-Dian to her stepmother’s land, far away from her mother, to get circumcised (genital mutilation), all in the name of traditions and cultures, at the age of nine, when she was able to remember every single thing she has been through in every stage of her life.
Khayri was obliged to run away back to her mother, and on her way back, she met the village priest, an old man that tells stories, who advised her to be strong and never give up no matter what, and that inspired her of her first book Battle of Destiny that talks about “what men can do, women can also do.”
Back to the city with her mother in 2005, at the age of eleven, she pursued her studies. Her being circumcised became an additional pain of living without a father. Life has not been easy for them without their father, the head of the family, who could’ve made life easier, comfortable, and painless but who left for the United States with no trace when she was just five years old.
Her mother, a great woman, chose not to sit back, fold her hands, and watch her children’s life get ruined. She stood up, fought, and did everything possible to give them the love and care they needed to help them build a brighter future.
Khayri fortunately got in touch with her father who helped her join him in the United States in Boston, Massachusetts, and graduate from West Roxbury Academy high school, and since then, her sky became clear, and everything changed. Khayri Ba is willing to stand against circumcision of young girls and the violations of women’s rights in Conakry, Guinea.показать меньше
