Upon landing in Australia, her family were placed in a camp in Cowra, along with other migrants of many different nationalities. During her time there, Katarina, who already spoke Russian, became fluent at German, Polish, Latvian and, of course English.
Katarina’s family were forced to live in a tin shed that was later sold for use as a chook pen. She became accustomed to living in a red-back spider infested environment and often encountered snakes on the way to her beloved school.
Her saving grace was education. Katarina was encouraged and well-liked by her teachers.
After this, her family moved to Sydney, where she was subjected to racist bullying and a difficult environment. She was spurred on by her academic achievements, she found solace through her drawing and writing and was encouraged by pivotal figures in her life.
More than anything else, her faith in God caused her to turn her life around, and ultimately led to the creation of this book.показать меньше
