It was not a happy childhood. His parents were always fighting about the way his mother was with other men. They finally parted, and he was taken by his mother. That lead to more sadness as his mom had lots of boyfriends, in which she finally married one, but another man’s child was not in his mind, and soon Walter was kicked out.
After a short while that was spent with his sister and father, they told him he was not wanted, so he left home and joined the army at the age of fifteen and a half.
The army trained him well, and he became a very good shot with a rifle plus a very established sportsman. His service was soon over, and he decided to use his skills and joined up with a group to go fight in Africa.
He was caught up in some bloody fighting and saw some terrible sights, which affected him once he returned home. A doctor helped him clear his head by having him write about his terrors, and this resulted in his first book, Nobody’s Army Everyone’s War. He still thinks about his time in Africa, but he sleeps a lot better.показать меньше
