In 1942 he enlisted in the RCAF and within a year was commissioned as a pilot. Jackson was promoted to Flight Lieutenant in February of 1945, awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) in June and repatriated in September.
Jackson returned to Vancouver and received a BA in 1948 from the University of British Columbia. He then went to the Iowa Writers’ Workshop at the State University of Iowa, where he received a Master of Fine Arts in 1950.
In the years following, Jackson’s career advanced from Instructor at the University of Western Ontario, to Director of Extension and Research at Toronto’s RCAF Staff College, to Registrar at Carleton University in Ottawa, from which he retired in 1982.
Above Sumatra was Jackson’s first published novel. In addition to writing plays for the CBC, Jackson wrote extensively on air power and national defence. After his retirement in 1982 Jackson moved to Victoria BC where he continued to write and completed two further novels, as yet unpublished.показать меньше
