5/5The Invisible Man (1897) by H.G. Wells. This is the science fiction classic that has given rise to many many spin-off stories and film adaptations. H.G. Wells was in his writing prime when he penned this brilliant book. The moral that I came up for this tale is never become invisible unless you can undo the effect. Or something like that.Griffin is a scientist deeply interested in physics. When he manages to create a method of making a body's refractive index to that of air so that it neither absorbs nor reflects light and thus becomes invisible, he does it to himself but only after having figured out how to undo the effect. But he loses the paper that has the undo formula on it.Threatened with eviction by his landlord, Griffin disrobes and sets forth to destroy the man, only to end up destroying the building and his research. Naked, he steals food and clothing. The latter items necessary when he realizes the food he consumes can be seen within him, appearing to others as floating bits. And so “The Stranger” gets rooms at an inn and attempts to create the missing formula from memory, to no avail. He becomes increasingly crazed at his inability to be seen again and to resume a “normal” life. The locals become increasingly disturbed by this temperamental shut-in and his terrible manners leading to his fits of temper. As days pass the locals become more suspicious of this person who hides his identity behind heavy clothing and facial bandage wraps. When things come to a head, Griffin reveals his true identity and fights his way out of the inn and into a cold day outside, leaving his experiments behind as well as his precious notebooks. The book chronicles the further adventures of Griffin in his attempt to fight both the elements and his fellow man. Increasing desperate at his plight, lacking clothes against the weather, the ability to procure either food or lodging in his naked state, and finding the entire countryside turned against this invisible menace, he turns a chance encounter with an old acquaintance into a temporary reprieve from his torments. But soon his faith in the fellow is betrayed, leading to an untimely death. There are many psychological insights to be drawn from this tale but at heart it is a cautionary story about science and going too far. The Invisible Man is both a hero in his field of physics and a demon in his relationship with mankind. And despite the terrible power that
3/5Summary: In a small english village an invisible man causes havoc when he starts to terrorise the locals
Things I liked:
Style: The author used a sort of epistological style as if he was recreating the story based on the hearsay and reports of people that
had been around at the time.
Short: I always appreciate a book that manages to deliver something in less than 300 pages that other take 900 to do.
Things I thought could be improved:
Number of characters: In some scenes, especially involving physical conflict, the author throws in a bunch of bystanders which makes the scene hard to follow in text. More work could have been put into differentiating or developing the characters; or it might have been better to just remake the
scene and leave them out.
Highlight:
Funnily enough I think I most enjoyed the 'tell me the whole plan' section where the invisible man reveals the events that occured beforehe arrived. I found them the most tense and scary. Maybe the story should have been that one. 2/5This is such a famous novel that I was expecting a far better read. The opening chapter, as a muffled mysterious stranger comes to an inn, asking for a room and to not be disturbed is full of promise. But the rest of the story was tedious, as the invisible man loses his temper, and seems only to want to revenge himself on others. What is fascinating is the title which captures the imagination. But Wells strangely concentrates on the downside of invisibility - having to be naked in cold weather, being unable to eat invisibly, having others bump into you, without having some fun plus side moments. So, a great idea, and I'm sure this is why the novel is 'a classic' - but none of the characters were particularly interesting, the invisible man himself plain peculiar, and what he gets up to bizarre and slow-moving.
4/5I didn't expect this book to be as good as it was. I expected it to be a bit turgid but found it was quite the opposite, funny even. There is a definite dark humour running throughout this novel and I surprised myself by bursting into laughter (rather embarrassingly) on the train at one point! I liked the way that Wells throws in some of the problems that could come with being invisible, such as feeling the cold, can still be heard and smelt, walked into by people, can't travel far as no clothes can be worn especially regarding the feet, can't eat much as food can be seen in the body etc. The aspirations of Griffin's character are similar to those of Victor Frankenstein's as both tirelessly and desperately work to further science and their own glory, only to create chaos, regret and sometimes death. Such is the legacy of man and human nature and H.G Wells, very much ahead of his time, knew it.
4/5I have never read anything by H.G. Wells before, and I found this book very intriguing. I really enjoyed the beginning of the book. He set up the mood and atmosphere perfectly; it was very suspenseful. The middle of the story bogged down a bit, but by the ending I was enjoying it again. It was interesting to note that in my edition they noted four alternative endings to the one I read. They were very minor changes, and my favorite ending was not the one published in this edition. One of my favorite authors is C.S. Lewis, and though Lewis admired Wells’ writing, he disagreed with him philosophically on many points. I just read that Lewis based one of the characters in That Hideous Strength on Wells himself. I’m planning on reading that book and the first two in the Space Trilogy by Lewis in 2008, so I’m really looking forward to seeing Lewis’ take on Wells’ character and ideology.
3/5This was OK. But it felt insubstantial. How did he get to this point and why was he so power mad?
4/5I am such a geek. My favorite part of this book is the Invisible Man's brief lecture on how light and invisibility work, midway through the book. For a day, in the background of my brain I was designing camp curriculum's around it.
So, H.G. Wells has a reputation for a reason. This book is compulsively readable, if a tad old-fashioned. It does suffer the problem of being a book in which the main character is impossible to like. Though it does serve as a rather thorough argument that invisibility is not a fantastic superpower to have, and that it certainly does not free you of your dependence on other human beings. If anything, it makes that dependency sharper. Also, how much of our trust of people hinges on being able to see their face?
More pulp than psychological thriller, but I'm okay with that.
4/5I've actually never read this before, and was surprised both by how detailed the science of the transformation was (though I probably shouldn't have been, because this era was big on the science in science fiction) and how unsympathetic the protagonist was. Enjoyed very much!
4/5The set-up to this story is somewhat unusual, as it begins with a stranger wrapped in bandages arriving at an inn on a snowy night. Everyone assumes he's horribly disfigured, and the text goes on a bit as if that is indeed the case, but given the title we the reader are well aware that he is in fact invisible. That said, I did very much enjoy this story. It's more of a horror story than I expected, with the titular character unquestionably playing the part of the villain (as opposed to a mostly well-meaning scientist cursed by his own hubris, as with Frankenstein or Dr. Jekyll). The pitfalls of invisibility (such as being able to see through one's own eyelids, for example) added a certain spark to the narrative, and parts were surprisingly suspenseful. The Invisible Man's motivations were sort of vague and unsatisfying, but in general I recommend this book.
2/5This story may have been ground-breaking in its time, but in 2011 it just seems trite. A man makes himself invisible and then goes on a crime wave. There are some interesting philosophical ideas about visibility being one of the keys of keeping civilization working, and that's why I gave it two stars. The big reveal at the end of the book that the invisible man is an albino and thus was hiding from the world doesn't have the intended shock value.
4/5This story is from so long ago, yet it remains a compelling and interesting read. The violence is rather stark and not something I care for. I enjoyed looking up words with which I was unfamiliar.
4/5Another book that I'm way behind the curve in reading - I'm sure many read this in their early teens. Much more than just a regular sci-fi book though, I felt it offered a glimpse of the dark side of the human psyche.
3/5Seriously, this novel would've been far more enjoyable if the protagonist hadn't been such a jerk. Of course, the question what happens if someone who considers himself the peak of brilliance has the opportunity to remove himself from all social conventions, but the answer given here - that social conventions are the only thing that keeps a conscience in place, and that without it and the power to act on one's whims, a person nearly inevitably becomes a monster - is too simple for my tastes.I would like to read the same story from Griffin's perspective.
5/5My first Wells book, and I must read more of his now. Much better than I had even guessed it would be.
3/5There's a pretty good message to scientists here; Just because you can figure out how to do something it doesn't mean it's a good idea. The story is readable and has its moments, but it isn't quite as compelling as I had hoped. Seriously, what's the REAL point here? Nothing very meaningful seems to be going on here.
2/5A disappointing read. H.G Wells has much better tales. I would not recommend wasting your time on this one.
3/5Most of the Wells canon carries with it a double, or second, meaning. Here, the surface story of a scientist who succeeds in giving himself a negative refractive index, plays host to two other interpretations: one, the scientific urge, and the results of experimentation without moral or ethical umpires; and two, the sense that without societal restraints, man can become beastly.
5/5One of the neat things about Wells was his attention to detail. He was very careful to make the man an albino to facilitate his way of making the man invisible. Like the bit with the tea in "The First Men in the Moon", it's little things like this that make the story better than average. The character & situation are also well done.I consider this one of the 'must reads' for anyone interested in SF. So many other works built off of it. It's an excellent baseline to measure them against.
3/5From the twentieth century's first great practitioner of the novel of ideas comes a consummate masterpiece of science fiction about a man trapped in the terror of his own creation.
3/5As far as I can recall, this is my first reading of this story. I enjoyed Mr. Wells' attention to the daily challenges (as well as the broader implications) of being invisible. I enjoyed his ability to blend humour with tragedy. A short, enjoyable read.
4/5When asked what is the one superpower a person would like to have, the one that comes just after flying and just before mind reading is invisibility. The thoughts of the advantages one person would have over the rest of humanity are tantalizing. Being able to steal or to spy or to learn things otherwise off limits; these thoughts must have filled the head of Griffin, the Invisible Man. This novel surprised me in its level of violence and perspective. It does not show a man made insane by his condition. The condition unhinges him instead. To me, Griffin was a tightly wound man, hemmed in by social convention and his lowly position as a student. Once he has power, he quickly abuses it and that is his downfall. Friendships and trust are destroyed by the fact that he let his baser nature rule him.
4/5This probably would have worked better as a short story given that there are no major sympathetic characters. But still, Wells' exploration of egomania and the practical aspects of invisibility are captivating enough that the 200-odd pages go just as fast. The climax is as taut and suspenseful as anything out of Grisham or King. And even if the writing is sometimes stilted and the action handled clumsily, the book is well worth the read and has undoubtably earned its status as a classic.
4/5Lively and bizarrely humorous. There are numerous comic English characters. H. G. Wells was not all that impressed by his countrymen. This book is very different from "The Island of Dr. Moreau", the only one of Wells' other books that I have read. The reading was excellent. There is some inherent humor in a story in which the protagonist is necessarily naked or stealing the clothes off other people's bodies; the fact that this was a Victorian novel makes it somehow a bit more funny.
5/5This is,for me,one of the finest Science Fiction stories of all times. From the opening lines-'The stranger came early in February, one wintery day, through a biting wind and a driving snow, the last snowfall of the year, over the down, walking from Bramblehurst Railway Station, and carrying a little black portmanteau in his thickly-gloved hand.-to the fantastic end,the reader is transported into the bleak world of the Invisible Man.Evil though he undoubtably becomes, one cannot but feel a great pity for him in his terrible end. H.G. Wells is without doubt an extremely fine writer in this genre.
4/5The Invisible Man is a tale of the antihero, Griffin, a scientist/student who found a way to make himself invisible which he saw as a means of power. “An invisible man is a man of power”. But there are disadvantages and everything he hoped to accomplish is halted by these difficulties, dogs that sense him, food which shows when ingested. Griffin can take his place beside Frankenstein and Faust as individuals who become more and more destructive as they pursue power. It is also a moral fable; invisibility places Griffen outside of society and alienates him. In the 1001 reference book; the reviewer states that the novel shows the author’s hostility to Nietzschean thought and particularly “superman”. The novel also reminds us that scientific discovery can be used to further evil rather than good. I enjoyed this tale and at first was thinking 3 stars but changed my mind and gave it four.
4/5This book is a quick easy read and well worth it. Not a tremendous amount happens in the story, but then again its only 110 pages. It is a classic science fiction story about a man who makes himself invisible. However life as an invisible man isn't exactly as he believed it would be.
4/5I would probably give this book a 3.5 but since that isn't possible, I rounded up. I enjoyed this book and thought it to have many thought invoking ideas. The creativity and thought put into what it would be like to become invisible is great and it really made me think. I may have given this a higher rating if I had read it back in the day when it came out. Knowing the story over the years without having read the book has ruined it a little for me. As always though I love H.G. Wells writing and amazing originality for his time.
4/5This book is a famous thriller from the author H.G. Wells. All begins when a stranger arrives in the village of Iping, wearing a long coat, gloves and a hat, covered in bandages and hiding his eyes with dark glasses. Nobody knows about him and why his strange behavior. Then, his secret is discovered and begins a dramatic adventure. The story is a bit slow at the beginning, but then it's pretty interesting and exciting.
4/5H. G. Well's classic story of mad science gone wrong. My knowledge of the story was most definitely formed by the movies and cultural references and it was not at all what I was expecting. I found this book to me much more engaging and easy to read then I had been expected, I tend to have trouble reading older writing styles. I had always assumed this story was about a man driven mad after using himself as a Guinea pig and instead found it to be about a sociopath who lost all impulse control after using himself as a Guinea pig. It made it very had to care or feel and sympathy for the character but it was still a fascinating readI enjoyed the science, as impossible as it is, and it did make me think and try to figure out how such a thing would effect the human body. For example, how would he see? An enjoyable look at science and science fictions past that was well worth the read.
